Three ways to host several sites
| Setup | Isolation | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| One account, addon domains | Low: all sites share one user and its limits | A handful of your own small sites |
| One account per site (reseller or WHM) | High: each site has its own user, limits and backups | Agencies and client sites |
| A VPS with a free panel | Depends on the panel; per-site users in CloudPanel | Developers running their own projects |
For the first option, see our addon domains guide.
The control panels compared
| cPanel and WHM | DirectAdmin | aaPanel | CloudPanel | |

Keep sites separate
- Separate users: each site runs as its own system user, so a hacked plugin on one site cannot change another.
- Separate databases and database users: never share one database user between sites.
- Resource limits: on CloudLinux, each account has its own CPU and memory limits, so one busy site does not slow the rest.
Automate the routine work
| Task | How to automate it |
|---|---|
| WordPress core, plugin and theme updates | WordPress Toolkit in cPanel, or WP-CLI from cron |
| SSL certificates | AutoSSL in cPanel, Let’s Encrypt in DirectAdmin, aaPanel and CloudPanel |
| Backups | Scheduled backups per account, sent off the server |
| Malware scanning | A server-wide scanner such as Imunify or Linux Malware Detect |
| Uptime checks | An external monitor for every domain |
Our WordPress Toolkit guide shows how to update many WordPress sites from one screen.
Staging sites
With several sites, changes are safer on a staging copy first. WordPress Toolkit can clone a site to a staging subdomain and copy changes back. On other panels, create a subdomain, copy the files and database, protect it with a password, and tell search engines not to index it. Delete staging copies you no longer use, because forgotten copies with old plugins are a common way in for attackers.
Keep track of everything
- ✓ A list of every site: domain, server, account, CMS and owner.
- ✓ Domain renewal dates, so no client site goes offline because a domain expired.
- ✓ Who has admin access to each site, and when it was last reviewed.
- ✓ Where each site’s backups are stored, and when a restore was last tested.
When to move up a level
- From one account to reseller hosting, when you start hosting sites for clients.
- From reseller hosting to a Cloud VPS with WHM, when you need full control or more resources.
- From one VPS to several, when one busy site affects the others, or for separate staging and production.

Hosting sites for clients? Choose reseller hosting or a Cloud VPS with WHM, and keep every site in its own account.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best way to host many websites?
For client sites, one account per site with cPanel and WHM or DirectAdmin. For your own projects on a VPS, aaPanel or CloudPanel work well.
Can I host several sites on one cPanel account?
Yes, as addon domains. They share one user and its limits, so it suits a few of your own sites.
Which free panel is best for many sites?
CloudPanel gives each site its own user, which helps isolation. aaPanel offers more one-click apps. Neither includes full email hosting like cPanel.
Do I need reseller hosting for client sites?
It is the simplest way to give each client their own cPanel account, with separate limits and backups.
Should staging sites be on the same account as live sites?
They can be, as long as they are password-protected and not indexed. For larger projects, a separate account or server keeps them fully apart.
How do I update many WordPress sites at once?
Use WordPress Toolkit in cPanel, or WP-CLI scripts on a server you manage.
