What creative websites need
| Need | Designers | Photographers | Writers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main content | Portfolio pages, case studies | Galleries of large images | Blog posts, book pages |
| Biggest technical issue | Page speed with rich layouts | Image size and storage | Easy publishing and email lists |
| Selling | Services, templates | Prints, licences, client galleries | Books, subscriptions |
Choose a platform
- WordPress suits all three: portfolio themes, gallery plugins, a built-in blog, and shop plugins. Install it in one click from cPanel.
- A static site, built with a site generator or exported from a design tool, is very fast and needs almost no maintenance. It suits simple portfolios.
- Joomla or Drupal suit larger sites with complex structure, but take more learning.
Our WordPress Toolkit guide shows how to install and manage WordPress in cPanel.
Get images right (the biggest speed factor)
A photo straight from a camera can be 10 to 30 MB. On a web page it should usually be well under 500 KB. That one change matters more than any hosting upgrade.
- ✓ Resize images to the largest size the page actually shows, for example 2,000 pixels wide for full-width photos.
- ✓ Export as WebP or AVIF where your platform supports it, or as compressed JPEG.
- ✓ Let your CMS create smaller versions for phones, and turn on lazy loading so images load as visitors scroll.
- ✓ Keep full-resolution originals on your computer and in a backup, not on the website.
Plan storage and bandwidth honestly
Add up what the website itself needs: optimised images, the CMS, plugins and the database. A large portfolio with thousands of web-sized photos may need tens of gigabytes. Choose a plan with room to grow, and check your usage in cPanel from time to time. Our bandwidth and disk space guide explains the numbers. Remember that backups kept inside the account also use space, so store them off the account where you can.
Do not use your website hosting as the archive for all your raw files. Use dedicated backup or cold storage for originals, so the website stays fast and the archive stays safe.
Speed up galleries with caching and a CDN
- Turn on page caching in your CMS, so pages are not rebuilt for every visitor.
- Use a CDN, so images are served from locations near your visitors. This matters most if your audience is spread across countries.
- Choose a server location near most of your visitors.
See our site speed guide for tools to measure the result.
Protect your work
- Backups: keep daily backups of the site and a separate copy of your originals.
- Watermarks: add a subtle watermark to images that are often copied. Right-click blockers do not stop copying.
- Copyright and licence notes: state who owns the work and how it may be used, on each page or in the footer.
- Updates: keep WordPress, themes and plugins updated, and use strong passwords with two-factor login.
Selling from your site
WooCommerce turns WordPress into a shop for prints, templates or books. Plugins for digital downloads deliver files after payment. Use your payment provider’s hosted checkout fields, so card details never touch your server. For platform options, see our self-hosted e-commerce guide.
When to upgrade
| Sign | Next step |
|---|---|
| Pages slow down during busy periods | Add caching and a CDN, then a larger plan |
| You regularly hit the account’s CPU or memory limits | Move to a Cloud VPS |
| You deliver large files, such as video or full-resolution downloads | Use dedicated storage or a VPS with more bandwidth |

Frequently asked questions
What hosting does a photography portfolio need?
Standard web hosting with WordPress is enough for most portfolios, as long as images are resized and compressed before upload.
How much disk space does a portfolio need?
Usually a few gigabytes for a well-optimised site. Large galleries may need tens of gigabytes. Keep originals elsewhere.
Do I need a CDN for my portfolio?
It helps when you have many visitors or visitors in many countries. Small local portfolios often do fine without one.
Can I sell prints or books from my website?
Yes. WooCommerce and digital download plugins work on our hosting.
How do I stop people copying my images?
You cannot stop it fully. Use watermarks, publish web-sized versions only, and state your copyright clearly.
