Offshore Cloud Hosting: What to Consider Before You Order

Short answer: Offshore cloud hosting runs your site on virtual servers in a data centre outside your home country. Location, latency, the provider’s acceptable use policy and the support you get matter more than the headline price. Check each one before you order.

What it means

The website, its files and its database work the same as on any other cloud server. The difference is where the hardware is located, and therefore which laws and network routes apply. A server abroad does not make a site private or immune from the law: it follows the laws of its location, and the provider’s acceptable use policy applies.

What to check before you order

  • ✓ Location and latency: test from the places your visitors are.
  • ✓ Acceptable use policy: read what content and activity are not allowed.
  • ✓ Resources: CPU, memory, storage and bandwidth included, and how you add more later.
  • ✓ Backups: how often, where stored, and how a restore works.
  • ✓ Support: hours, channels and response times, in writing.

Compare the total cost

Include add-ons such as extra IP addresses, backup storage and any management service. The total matters more than the first month’s price. Current offers and prices are on the product pages.
