What a clean-up involves

  1. Back up first. Copy the infected site and the database before touching anything, so you can compare later.
  2. Scan the whole account. Use a malware scanner such as ImunifyAV, Linux Malware Detect or ClamAV. Read the report before you delete anything.
  3. Find the way in. Look for outdated plugins, themes, scripts and stolen passwords. Removing malware without closing the entry point means the site will be infected again.
  4. Remove the infection. Replace core files with clean copies from the vendor, and remove unknown PHP files, injected code in configuration files and new admin users.
  5. Change every password for the account, FTP, email, the database and CMS admins.
  6. Check for blacklisting and ask for removal if needed.

Check whether the site is blacklisted

Search engines and browsers warn visitors about sites that spread malware. Check the status in Google Search Console (Security issues report) and in Google Safe Browsing. A quick check from the command line shows what a visitor sees:

curl -sI https://example.com/ | head -n 5
curl -s https://example.com/ | grep -i -E "iframe|eval\(|base64" | head

The second command is a rough filter, not a full scan. It finds common injection patterns, but it can also match normal code, so read each result before you act on it.

Preventing a repeat infection

  • ✓ Update the CMS, themes and plugins, and remove any you no longer use.
  • ✓ Use unique, strong passwords and two-factor login for admin accounts.
  • ✓ Set correct file permissions: 755 for folders and 644 for files, as explained in our file permissions guide.
  • ✓ Keep off-server backups, and test a restore.
  • ✓ Schedule regular malware scans, and read the reports.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my site is infected?

Common signs are unexpected redirects, new admin users, warnings from Google or your browser, and spam sent from your email. A malware scan confirms it.

Can I just delete the malicious files?

Sometimes, but if you do not close the way in, the attacker can return. Clean the site and fix the cause.

Will my search rankings recover after a clean-up?

Recovery takes time. After the site is clean, request a review in Google Search Console and keep the site clean.

Should I restore from a backup instead?

If you have a clean backup from before the infection, restoring it can be faster. Then fix the entry point, and reapply any changes made since the backup.
