Imunify360 vs cPGuard: How to Choose a Security Suite for Your cPanel Server

Short answer: Imunify360 (from CloudLinux) and cPGuard (from OPSShield) are both all-in-one security suites for hosting servers, combining malware scanning, a web application firewall and brute-force protection. Imunify360 is the broader platform, with proactive PHP protection, patch management and deep CloudLinux integration. cPGuard is lighter and often cheaper on small servers. Compare them on your own server with trial licences, because results depend on your sites and traffic.

Why a security suite

A hosting server faces the same attacks every day: password guessing on logins, exploit attempts against old plugins, uploaded web shells, and malware injected into PHP files. A suite combines the defences in one place, with one dashboard and one set of alerts, instead of separate tools for the firewall, scanner and WAF.

When Imunify360 fits better

  • Servers already running CloudLinux, where Imunify360 works together with CageFS and LVE limits.
  • Teams that want vulnerability patching for WordPress plugins and live kernel patching from the same vendor.

When cPGuard fits better

  • Smaller servers where licence cost is a large part of the budget.
  • Administrators who want a lighter tool and are comfortable tuning rules themselves.
  • Servers on panels or setups where you prefer cPGuard’s integration.

How to compare them on your own server

  1. Take a backup or snapshot of the server.
  2. Install one product with a trial licence, and leave it in a monitoring or report-only mode where possible.
  3. Run a full scan, and review what it finds and what it would change.
  4. Watch CPU, memory and disk use during scans, and the false positives reported by your users.
  5. Remove it cleanly, then repeat with the other product, before you choose.

Do not run both at once:

Two security suites on one server conflict over the firewall, the WAF rules and file scanning. Uninstall one completely before installing the other.

What to check before you buy

  • ✓ Licence model: per server, per number of accounts, or per domain.
  • ✓ Support for your control panel version and operating system.
  • ✓ How malware clean-up works, and whether you can restore a cleaned file.
  • ✓ How the firewall works with your existing one, such as CSF.
  • ✓ Resource use during full scans on a server like yours.

What happens when a site is infected

Both suites can find an infected file and either clean it, quarantine it, or report it. Before you turn on automatic clean-up, decide how you want to handle false positives: a cleaned file that was actually needed can break a site. Start with reports only, review the first results, and keep backups, so any file can be restored. After an infection, always find the cause, usually an outdated plugin or a stolen password, or the site will be infected again.

Security basics that matter whichever you choose

  • Keep the operating system, cPanel and PHP updated.
  • Use strong passwords and two-factor authentication for WHM and cPanel.
  • Keep off-server backups and test restores.
