Caribbean Dedicated Servers: What to Check Before You Order

Short answer: A dedicated server in the Caribbean is a whole physical server in a data centre in that region. Before you order, check the latency to your users, the acceptable use policy, the power and network arrangements, and what support and backups are included.

Check latency from your users

Latency depends on the route between your users and the data centre. Ask the provider for a test address, then measure with ping and mtr from the places your users are, at busy and quiet times.

Read the acceptable use policy

Every hosting provider sets rules for the content and activities it allows. Read the policy in full before you order, especially if your business involves payments, regulated products or user-generated content.

Understand the power and network setup

  • Ask about power redundancy and the data centre’s connectivity.
  • Check the port speed and the monthly transfer included.
  • Ask how planned maintenance is announced and how incidents are reported.

Plan backups and restores

A server in any location needs backups kept off the server, tested restores, and a written recovery plan. Ask whether backups are included, how often they run, and how long they are kept.

The rules that apply to your business depend on where you and your customers are, not only on where the server is. Get advice for your own situation before you rely on any location for legal or tax reasons.
